If you receive a letter from the Inland Revenue, or Customs and Excise, stating that they are commencing an Investigation or Enquiry into you or your business, it can feel extremely intimidating and frightening. Unfortunately, Enquiries/Investigations are a way of life and, to never actually be involved in one of these would be fairly unusual.

HM Revenue and Customs use these Enquiries as a way of checking that your Tax Return is correct and that you have paid the correct amount of tax. Enquiries can range from visits to your premises to check your PAYE or VAT records, to general queries about certain entries on your Tax Return, to full investigations where the Inland Revenue will want to check all of your business records to check all the figures.
